Inexpressible Joy

My parents said I was an accident; a birth they did not plan. I grew up knowing after two daughters, my parents wanted a son. My parents loved me, but I often felt unnoticed. When they had a second son I became the middle child. Some days felt like a sibling competition for attention. Seldom did I win. I remember at an early age deciding to become a good student. Both my parents were teachers, so achieving at school could help me get noticed. They praised me for getting...

Unexpected Answer

“I cannot believe it—oh, yes I can!” God can open any door at any time. After months of waiting and having intermittent care for the bursitis in my hip while out of state, I walked into our local sport and spine physical therapy office seeking care. Praying before I went, I felt discouraged. Not sure if the out-of-state doctor’s order would be accepted or if I would have to wait again for treatment, I asked God to open the door for treatment with the right therapist. “Lord, I have...

Hug Your Lovey

I have watched our grandson hug his lovey and contently close his eyes to sleep. His lovey, a small light blue blanket with a bear head, faded and worn from two years of continuous attention is his constant companion. He sleeps with it, uses it like a puppet making squeaky noises, and tosses it around in play. He depends on his lovey at bedtime to soothe himself to sleep. He snuggles with it during the day for comfort and clings to lovey in new environments to feel safe. A...

Gratitude Turns to Joy

I am continuing to learn more lessons on rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks. My husband and I went fishing for salmon in Lake Michigan. The wave report posted one to two foot waves. Instead, our boat bounced in three foot waves with an occasional four footer. Like an acrobatic trying to keep his balance, my husband put fishing lures on the lines and lowered the downriggers to fish. I wrestled with the steering wheel to keep the boat on a steady trolling line and speed. Determined to battle the...

Journaling with God

“Lord, I need to be in your presence—praising, confessing, asking, and receiving. I need quiet time to listen and write down your response to my prayers. Daily journaling with you transforms my life. I am spending joyous time with you and Jesus.” Just as a flower turns towards the sunlight, I need to turn to my source of light—God’s Word. We’ve heard it said, “There is a scripture for every situation—when you seek, you will find.” Journaling from scriptures, devotionals, my own spiritual struggles and victories brings understanding and...

Finding Joy in Daily Moments

My husband says every job needs a tool and there is a right tool for every job. I, on the other hand, tend to grab what’s handy and try to make it work. Perhaps I learned this in childhood when I saw my dad break up an old chair in the basement and use the pieces as kindling to start our coal-burning furnace. I’ve watched my husband drill a hole in the wall before inserting a nail to hang a picture. I have grabbed a shoe on the floor...

Joy Challenge

Each morning, I read the Bible and believe God will speak to me through his word. Often I feel like the words were written just for me when I need direction, comfort, encouragement or peace. Other times, the scripture is convicting identifying a sin in my life or something I am neglecting. Today while meditating on James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” I asked myself, what does God’s Word say? The first scripture that popped into my head,...
